Salt and Pepper Big Band is a 17 piece big band – 5 saxes, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, piano, bass, guitar and drums.


S&P performs annually for the Union Hotel ANZAC Day Street Party on Weymouth Street. We start off the show with ‘ol standard Swing Era hits and then move on to some of our favourite Big Band charts from Sammy Nestico, Michael Mossman, Dave Wolpe, Quincy Jones, Bill hduhn, lman, Dave Barduhn, Mike Barone, Lennie Niehaus, Tom Voss, Mike Tomaro, Stan Kenton, Buddy Rich, Dizzy Gillespie, Don Sebesky, Duke Ellington, Gordon Goodwin, Hanry Mancini, George Gershwin, Thad Jone and a buch of others!

“BIG BAND BONANZA AT THE TOP ROOM”

Two Adelaide big bands and a rock band, will provide the musical entertainment at a cabaret in the ARKABA HOTEL‘S TOP ROOM on Sunday, July 22. The big bands are the ROYAL AUSTRALIAN ARMY BAND (SA Detachment) and SALT AND PEPPER SWING, and the rock band is RIP IT UP.

Salt and Pepper Swing is a 15-piece group, five saxophones, three trumpets, three trombones, guitars and piano, bass and drums. Organiser of the group is saxophonist Dr. Graham Mussared, while other saxophonists are Sylvan (Schmoe) Elhay*, Gabriel Chamah, David Brooks* and Andrew Craigo. Members of the trumpet section are Daryl Pope*, son of former Our Thing big band, Jack Pope, Eddy Davis and Warren Heading, two of the new generation of musicians who have been taken under the wing of the older players.

Trombonists are Dave Winnall*, who is the tutor of the highly regarded Marryatville High School Band, Cheryl Pope, the talented daughter of Jack Pope and Gareth Davis, a younger generation musician.

Stuart Niven is on piano, Sandy Close, whose father Rollo ran the Wonderland Ballroom for many years, is on bass, Mike Bevan is on guitar and the drummer is Yuri Markov*, who also will be playing in the Royal Australian Navy Band at the cabaret.
